Val Thorens Snow Report: 18th February 2014

The snow gods have been very kind for the holidays

It’s the February holidays! The snow gods have been very kind to us this week. In case you were worried about the fog and snow on Sunday, Monday morning definitely cleared up all weather issues! The sky was a perfect shade of blue, no clouds in the sky and the sun was shining. Sunday was the day to be skiing in Val Thorens and let’s hope the bad weather hasn’t followed anyone out from the UK!

If you were out skiing on Sunday, how much could you see? Val Thorens has been hit recently with quite a few “Journee Blanche” i.e flat light days. This is when the colour of the sky blends with the colour of the snow making it near impossible to see the snow beneath your feet and negotiate your way down the pistes. If you were wearing sunglasses you would have been in near darkness. Anything with an orange or red lense wouldn’t have been very helpful either. Luckily a few of you might have had a yellow lense on! For any flat light days yellow lenses are the best eyewear. If you don’t have one then pop down to your nearest sports shop to check out the latest offerings. They will sort you out! However, I feel like the mirrored lenses might be a better bet looking at the weather!

Val Thorens has the best of both worlds right now. The weather is only the beginning. One glance at the slopes will show you the amount of fresh snow that has fallen. To make the most of this snow you need to get yourself on a set of powder skis! Powder skis are designed to glide through the fluffy snow. Piste skis do the completely opposite; these skis keep your feet solidly on the ground on the piste but as soon as you venture out of bounds you will sink like a stone! Make sure you know where you’re going if you do head off piste. Due to the warm temperature fresh snow will compact and instead of staying loose and light it will compact and be liable to give way in big chunks.

Don’t forget to check out all that Val Thorens has to offer from the sports complex, shops, bars and cafes. I hope you all make the most of the clear skies and fresh snow this week and see you up on the slopes!
