Val Thorens Snow Report: 3rd March 2014

Jump on the bus to beat the queues by heading up high

featured in Snow report Author Cara Brown - Ski Racer, Guest Reporter Updated

The Three Valleys has set itself up nicely for great week of skiing! Last week it saw another big snowfall which covered up all the off piste tracks and gave the mountains a fresh blanket of fluffy snow. The weather has been a bit crazy for March! It seems like it can’t decide whether it’s winter or spring. There has been a lot of fog lying in in Valley but the tops of the mountains are clear and in the sun. The next few days should be bringing a lot more snow…

It seems that everybody is out for the first lifts at the moment. The first lift opens at 9am. If you're staying in Meribel and you really want to get that first run feeling when no one else is around skip the lift queues and take the bus up to the Altiport or the Rond Point! From these stops take the Altiport chairlift to the top of the blue run Renardeau or the green run Blanchot which takes you a little chairlift called Loze. At the top of the Loze chairlift you get a great view over Meribel and there is also a very nice café and picnic spot. From here you can continue your day by heading back over to Meribel or around the mountain to Courchevel or the less busy runs at La Tania.

If you’re out here with young children the Altiport is the place to be. When I was little I used to spend hours skiing through the trees at the edge of the Blanchot run. With snowfall this year the paths, complete with mini jumps, will be amazing and I wish I was still small enough to duck under the trees and ski down them! If your children enjoy jumps why not enrol them in the ESF freestyle team, for skiers and snowboarders of all levels and ages. If your kids would rather tag along with mum and dad make sure you end the day by skiing down to the Chaudanne via the Doron blue run which has great jumps hidden behind every single snow cannon! If your little devils would rather race down the hill at a ridiculous speed the ESF also run the Stage Slalom that will fill all their speed needs. Don’t worry if your child’s first language is not French, most of the ski instructors speak English very well and there’s a high chance your child will finish the week with a great French vocabulary and loads of new friends. I got into ski racing with the ESF and I remember crying at the end of the week when it was time to go home…

The pistes are very full this week so be careful when you’re whizzing around, remember the downhill skier always has right of way, don’t stop underneath rolls and always check around you before setting off. I hope everyone has a great week skiing and enjoying everything there is to offer in the Three Valleys!
