Val Thorens Snow Report: 18th March 2013

Massive March Powder Week Ahead

Erm, there’s a lot of snow. I mean a lot of snow, heaps of the stuff! Literally overnight! It is amazing for March. Conditions are probably the best they have been all season. If you have not already got something booked to come to the Three Valleys then get yourself here and enjoy the white stuff!

Prior to our extremely large dump of snow, conditions in the Three Valleys were still pretty good. There was really bad visibility on Thursday and unfortunately another trip to the medical centre with one of my guests who had hurt his wrist. Whilst there were powdery sections on the piste on Thursday there were also sections where the snow had been blown off. It was one of these particularly icy sections which took my guest by surprise resulting in a fall. Luckily nothing was broken, phew.

My injured guest contemplated missing the last day on the mountain but when we woke up to blue sky the temptation was too much. After the first couple of runs his confidence was back up and he was more than pleased that he had not opted for a chalet day. The pistes were in great condition and still really quiet. There were also some lovely powdery sections to play around in off the main piste which had hardly been touched. Fresh tracks and lots of falling about ensued. It was particularly interesting for our injured guest trying to paw his way out of powder with just one operational hand. Everyone was more than sympathetic and we did not just film him and laugh, honestly.

My guests staying for a short beak leaving Sunday had the joy of Saturday skiing. Really quiet pistes and once again, great conditions. They were some new snowboarders who had never skied outside the UK. Prior to their trip they had asked about heli drops. I advised they might want to tackle a chair lift first. On the first day they studied the map and exclaimed; “woah that’s a steep run”. My reply; “That’s a ski lift”. So, when they opted for a trip to Val Thorens alone whilst I completed changeover in the Chalet I was sceptical they would make it back. They did apparently make it there, had some champagne in La Folie Douce, a jagerbomb or two and made it back, I am not sure how! Not without getting lost once or twice though which the kids enlightened me about in the evening during an Uno-off.

The snow then seriously started on Sunday and did not stop. Skiing was interesting, lots of powder and bad visibility. During an après vin chaud we watched as the snow just got thicker and thicker. One of my guests adopted the role of snow reporter and continued his snow update throughout the evening meal, every time he walked past the door; still snowing.

I could not believe the amount of snow I woke up to today. It is really exciting and just the boost seasonaires need to get us back out on the mountain at this time of year. Lots of exploring and playing outside to be done.

Heavy snow is forecast to continue today and tonight. I cannot wait to see what I wake up to tomorrow! The snow shovel will definitely need another outing. Then it looks like light snow for a couple of days, a couple of days cloud, then sunshine. What a week!

So, it could not be a better snow report really. Loads of snow and more due overnight. Although maybe it is only an ideal report to read if you are heading out here. Not such a good report to read if you are sat at your desk with no more winter holiday allowance.

Don’t worry we’ll make the most of it for you.....
