Mixed conditions in resort this week

A snowy April ahead in Val Thorens

Easter week has been a cracker and I have had some very happy families staying at the Chalet this week.

When I was out on the mountain on Saturday there was not a cloud in the sky, it was just beautiful. The pistes were in great condition and even by 11am we were finding freshly groomed untouched runs in Les Menuires.

Saturday is always a bit of a ski treat with a lot of people either leaving/arriving in resort so the slopes tend to be quiet. This was certainly the case on Saturday where we had most runs just for our group. As temperatures have been staying low, the pistes are fairly hard packed first thing and on Saturday with the sun shining they were pretty cut up by early afternoon, as is expected for late March skiing. The French skiers I was spending the day with summed it up perfectly with their expressions ‘fondue’ and ‘soupe’! If you know what to expect then it can be good fun navigating your way down but a bit more tiring.

The sun loungers were all lined up at the sports centre terrace as temperatures have got up to around 14 degrees when the sun is out. The off piste at the moment is not outstanding but there were still groups heading over the back of La Masse to explore.

Since the weekend the weather has not been great however this does not seem to have spoiled the fun. With a mix of snow and rain this week I was expecting an early finish for my ski group however this was not the case. The general consensus seemed to be that the best skiing was done in the morning with the afternoons spent enjoying long lunches and trips to La Folie Douce.

There is snow forecast for tomorrow and Saturday with the sun warming things up on Monday with more snow again on Tuesday! There are also high winds over the next couple of days so take care. April looks like it could be snowy, snowy!
