Val Thorens Snow Report: 12th March 2015

More snow due this weekend? Let's hope so...

It’s starting to feel a lot like…summer! There are people in resort wearing shorts and some people are opting for non-ski type activities - I saw one guy giving his ski legs an alternative workout by cycling up to Val Thorens, brave man.

This does not however mean that the winter fun is over, oh no, not by a long way. In lower resorts there is still over a month left of the season and in Val Thorens two months as it does not close until May! The best bit of news however is that after this balmy week, temperatures are then forecast to drop and there is apparently more snow on its’ way this weekend! Put the shorts and the bike away people.

Since mid-February the ski lifts have now been open longer and the evenings have gradually become lighter meaning you can squeeze even more into the ski day. Ski trends this week are similar to those at the beginning of the season, with visitors from lower resorts heading up to high altitude to take advantage of the snow in Val Thorens where temperatures are slightly cooler. This means that you might find slopes over that way busier than normal considering it’s a quieter part of the season. The terraces were ram jammed in Val Thorens with everyone enjoying the sunshine, luckily there are plenty to choose from in the base of resort and on the slopes.

The weather this week has been crisp clear, fantastic for taking snaps to send back home to make friends and colleague jealous. Here’s a quick pointer for those who have the common ‘loss of phone battery panic’! One thing I did notice recently which could help avert this serious condition is there is a phone charging station in the Val Thorens Tourist Office. Located smack bang in the middle of VT, you can’t miss it. You can relax in the knowledge that you won’t be sans phone for your ski day.

It seems that some people weren’t perhaps too keen on skiing over to Belleville this week in these spring conditions or maybe they just needed a lift home. I spotted two choppers in the 2 Michelin Star restaurant La Bouitte’s helicopter ‘parking bay’! That’s certainly one way to get around the Three Valleys.

My own ski day did go a bit awry yesterday I have to confess. I feel Valthonet may be replacing me soon for a more gnarly, off-piste, snow park and half pipe reporter as my attempts are seriously lacking. The day was absolutely beautiful and I loaded up the car and headed up the mountain ready to hit the slopes. Problem number one, no lift pass. I returned home and made the second attempt up the hill. Problem number two, no snowboard boots. So somehow rather than return for missing boots I ended up with a banana split and a glass of wine on the terrace at Face West in Val Thorens, oops! I did watch other people ski though, surely that counts for accurate reporting?

I have heard several people complaining this week about slushy conditions, which cannot be denied. It is March however and there has been blue sky every day. There is snow forecast this weekend with mixed reports of snow at around 1400m on Saturday but snow on Sunday and Monday for Val Thorens. Anyway, it does seem to concur that at some point there will be snow so I’ll take that! Fingers crossed you’ll be seeing a Val Thorens dump alert in the next few days…
