Val Thorens Snow Report: 22nd November 2014

First day on the slopes of Val Thorens & it's a Bluebird!

Today has been long anticipated; with the heavy snow fall over the last few weeks in the Alps, there has been much speculation about what this winter season may have in store for us...

And today, we were certainly not disappointed! Despite the crowds of people and the resort not being open to full capacity just yet, we were treated to a day that would put a smile on any face. Blue skies from first thing, well groomed pistes, a good base for the start of the season and even a few cheeky forays off piste...plenty to keep everyone happy!

After checking we had all the right gear with us (the usual first day nerves always make you think you have forgotten something) we headed to the slopes for our first taste of ski to snow action for the 2014/15 season. Having collected our skis from Intersport the night before, they had suggested we start the day with some carving skis until the slopes warmed up with the sun...and I suspect so that we could warm our legs up as well! This turned out to be a good call as there were a few icy patches first thing before the sun softened it up.

The pistes were in really good condition, especially first thing before the hoards of people had reached them. But soon we were ready to take to the fatter skis and headed back to Intersport to change them. The afternoon was fantastic with some soft snow, not too spring like considering the temperatures we had, and a few small adventures off the sides of the pistes to find the prized powder. After a few hours however the sun had taken hold and the snow was starting to feel just a little heavy under ski...or maybe the legs were feeling heavy?? Either way it was time to call it a day and make our way back down to town.

At this point you could really notice the sheer numbers of people on the pistes, so with tired legs I was careful to pick my way down slowly. Now it's time to go and sample the apres-ski and see what the town of Val Thorens has to offer on the opening weekend!
