Val Thorens Snow Report: 23rd March 2015

A sprinkling of spring snow to freshen up conditions

featured in Snow report Author Gemma Hunt, Val Thorens Reporter Updated

Conditions today were a lovely surprise! Whilst only a small amount of snow fell on Saturday, around 10cm, it has made a real difference. Not quite as I have seen advertised by some companies of ‘fresh pow pow’ and ‘a huge dump’ which is a little deceptive however the little sprinkle has certainly freshened things up.

Sunday was definitely a day for taking advantage of the pistes at higher altitude in Val Thorens. Lower resorts such as St Martin did not quite catch the snowfall with temperatures not dropping low enough and the pistes there are not in the best condition. There was a lot of cloud cover on Sunday but if you could get up above the clouds or into the cloud pockets then the pistes were in great condition. Otherwise visibility was pretty sketchy. The clouds then fully cleared by late afternoon to make a nice end to the ski day.

A beautiful Monday morning then awaited and I was really surprised by how good the pistes were on my first run in La Masse. Unfortunately I prolonged my coffee stop a little too long and by the time I hit the pistes again before midday they were already pretty slushy. Definitely a time to set the alarm and get up early to take advantage of the better snow conditions.

My morning pit stop was longer than expected due to my new obsession with the amazing dessert that is moelleux au chocolat! If you have not tried this, then you are seriously missing out. I have moved on from my past elevenses option, which is a good tip for you, of Café gourmand. This is a coffee and three little desserts. Pretty good and good value too. Always here for snow and dessert advice!

Anyway back to skiing. With blue sky all around I then had a great chocolate fuelled snowboard mainly sticking around Les Menuires with really quiet pistes. The resort is notably quieter at the moment as we are now nearing the end of March. I think I managed to enjoy the best part of the day as I was informed that the weather was going to be changing later on and as I headed back I could see the cloud clinging to the top of the mountains.

I have mainly been half day skiing this season due to working late afternoons. If you are on holiday at this time of year and want to be a little economical then it may also be better to opt for day by day lift pass purchase. Maybe just take a half day pass or restrict your ski area to just the Belleville valley including the higher slopes in Val Thorens rather than opting for the full Three Valleys pass. If the weather is bad then you may not choose to ski at all and instead head to the sports centre or just stay by the fire and rest ski legs. Whilst you will have to visit the lift pass everyone morning at least at this time of year there are hardly any queues and you may just save yourself a euro or two. [Read more about lift pass options here].

The weather for tomorrow is the same as today so definitely one for early bird skiers. There are then a few snowflakes forecast on and off from Wednesday to Friday and if it is the same as last weekend then once again it should just freshen things up nicely. Plenty of skiing to be had yet before the end of the season is upon us!
