Val Thorens Snow Report: 29th December 2014

What a difference a weekend makes - now there's snow all the way down to St Martin!

Unfortunately down in St Martin it was a green Christmas but we have finally had some snow and lots of it! Whilst the three valleys links have been open for the past week, there is now sufficient snow to ski down to each resort rather than having to take the lift down as applied for lower resorts in the previous week. So the Three Valleys is now up and running and this will hopefully mean a good start to 2015!

Both St Martin and La Masse have now been able to fully open up to join the Three Valleys ski domain after a delayed start with slopes now pisted all the way down. Whilst we have had a pleasing amount of snowfall the pistes lower down are still quite sketchy so please take care. There is powder to be had higher up and the snow at the top is fantastic. Conditions do change as you descend so please be aware and proceed with caution.

As you may have seen on the news at the weekend, unfortunately with the snow there came road chaos. With the biggest changeover of the season, Christmas guests leaving and New Year guests arriving, it has resulted in this week being full of ski stories with people competing for the longest journey to get here! Cars not being equipped with snow chains didn’t help but the problem lay largely between Moutiers and Albertville with freezing conditions on the road. It was great to see the resort act with constant updates and volunteers setting up beds in local sports halls for those stranded.

What a difference a day makes though, the reward for the weary travellers who eventually got to resort yesterday – blue sky and great snow today! We are forecast sun all week along with low temperatures which is great to preserve the lovely snow that has fallen. A significant drop in chilliness can be felt so make sure you layer up. The roads have now been well cleared but with temperatures not rising above -5 for the next couple of days, please drive with caution particularly in each resort centre.

With people still only arriving yesterday in resort it meant a relatively quiet day on the slopes for those lucky enough to get up there. The slopes will be busy this week but as long as you time your arrival right (i.e. before or after ski school start time) you shouldn’t experience too many queues. The beauty of the Three Valleys is that it is the largest ski area in the world - so whilst you may queue at the start of your day, once you’re up and out it’s a big playground for ski fun!

Enjoy and have a great week.
