Val Thorens Snow Report: 3rd April 2015

Easter Weekend snow report

featured in Snow report Author Gemma Hunt, Val Thorens Reporter Updated

The good news is that there has been a nice dump of snow this week however it hasn’t actually been the best conditions for anyone on an Easter ski break.

Whilst some days have started off with clear blue skies, conditions have changed rapidly with pole-to-pole bad visibility. This has meant that normal ski times are extended, enjoyment levels deteriorate and an ‘on the slopes paddy’ has taken place, kids and adults alike! I have greeted some very tired looking skiers this week with a vin chaud as it seems lots of people have opted for an early end to the day and headed to the bar. Not a bad end to the day!

Over the course of the week there has actually now been now around 60cm of fresh snow in Val Thorens. Absolutely great news as we start the first ski week in April with another five weeks left to ski at the highest resort in Europe!

There is light snow mixed with sun and cloud this weekend for anyone coming for a mini-ski break. The rest of the week then pans out with temperatures dropping and the sun coming out, it sounds absolutely perfect! If you are heading out next week though make sure you aren’t fooled by the sunshine on Monday and Tuesday as it is forecast to drop to -12 brrr.

Along with the good weather there’s also a couple of good events taking place in the Belleville Valley next week.

If you are looking for a slightly different way to spend your Easter Sunday there is an Easter Egg hunt on skis taking place in Les Menuires! It is free to register just head over to the Tourist Office then collect your map in front of the sports club. You need to get registered quickly as there are only 20 places available and for the competitive amongst you, the winner is the team who collects the most eggs. Bonne Chance!

Then for the serious skiers amongst you there is also a fab opportunity to have a sneaky peak at the 2015/16 ski range for Atomic and Salomon. You can take the kit for a test ski from 9am to 4.30pm on place Caron. You will just need to take along some ID in return for the generous ski loan. I find it is always really advisable to try and test either skis or snowboard before you buy as it is a totally individual purchase. When you are buying kit, that is certainly not cheap, it really doesn’t make sense to just pick it out of a shop without trying on the piste. Ski rental shops also allow you to swap and change if you are looking to buy. I know some shops located next to ski domes in England also offer the same service. Unless of course you opt for the ‘which colour suits my ski outfit’ tactic in which case this advice doesn’t apply!

So whether you are skiing to find chocolate, testing out skis or just enjoying the fresh April snowfall it’s looking like a crackin’ weekend…
