Val Thorens Snow Report: 7th May 2015

The final snow report for this season :-(

featured in Snow report Author Gemma Hunt, Val Thorens Reporter Updated

In six years this is the first season that I’ve still been snowboarding in May woohoo! Val Thorens is still open with just two lifts closed, they’ve done a damn fine job of keeping the slopes going for everyone to enjoy. Well done VT!

Admittedly it’s not the best skiing you will have done in your life. You have to have your wits about you as the pisteurs I’m sure have done their best, but in some sections there is a chunk or two missing from the normally smooth piste eesschk! The snowpack is pretty hard and I’ve never heard so much scraping whilst sat on a chairlift and hear this, from skiers not snowboarders! All in all though there’s still some great skiing to be had before you pack your ski stuff away until next year.

It was a real treat to have been wakeboarding just an hour away at the weekend and then snowboarding a few days later, you have just got to love the French Alps.

It is ‘Dutch Week’ this week in Val Thorens which is evident from all the parked up coaches and the only language you seem to hear on the ski lifts. There are limited bars and restaurants still open but Bar 360 was certainly still going good and there’s plenty going on at Malaysia this week if you want to paaarty.

It was also great this late in the season to still be venturing on lifts I’ve never been on before! We headed up to the Col which still had amazing views but the piste was a little bit icey on the way down, anxious to not be spending my summer holidays with a broken leg I definitely opted for some cautious snowboarding here.

It is an absolute credit to the Val Thorens team that they have kept the resort open until they close this weekend. Those extra weeks really make a difference to the season. The change in altitude was definitely evident on my drive back down the mountain where I noticed that cows are now grazing where the St Martin piste normally runs, no skiing to be had there then!

So there we go, that’s season 2014/15 done and dusted as it now draws to a close. Despite not being the best snowfall on record, it was still a bloomin’ good one! That’s not all from the mountains though, when winter ends, summer begins…
