Val Thorens Snow Report: 9th March 2015

It's warming up in Val Thorens

featured in Snow report Author Gemma Hunt, Val Thorens Reporter Updated

It’s getting hot, hot, hot this week! Over the weekend temperatures have been rising and are set to continue to do the same with apparently around 15 degrees by midweek!

Thursday was pretty deceptive with blue skies but still pretty nippy. Skiers clearly needing slightly earlier coffee stops than expected to warm hands and toes. The week ended with a beautiful day on Friday after a mixed bag of weather for people staying last week, it allowed for a great ski to end to their holiday. Saturday was busier than usual on the slopes perhaps with people taking advantage after a disastrous arrival day the week before delayed by ‘the rock’. The weather was not quite as clear as the previous two days, but a delight all the same.

I had a slightly different ski day on Saturday taking a trip to the Val Thorens Ice Driving Academy. There are various options; karting, lessons with a driver or being driven around by a professional. Anyone who’s seen my driving skills will be pleased to hear I went for the pro option! The academy was much busier than I thought, especially on a Saturday with what appeared to be lots of people enjoying a treat at the end of their holiday. It’s a really unique experience and after just five minutes my three laps were done! I definitely thought we would crash more than once but the guy had everything under control, despite worrying me by taking his hands off the wheel whilst hurling round a corner on the track eek! You can access the track either by skiing into it (just above the Plein Sud lift) or you can drive and park. Depending on your budget and skills there’s plenty to choose from and you can book via email. I have to say I was the only lady up there enjoying the experience, it seemed a definite boys day out!

Then it was back to skiing and Sunday was a beauty of a day. I do love it when the forecast comes good. You can actually plan some great days as you know the weather will be fantastic. That certainly seems to be the case this week. For once, I was happy to get the fresh air from the chairlifts as it was getting pretty toasty in the bubble lift heading up the mountain. The warm temperatures did not just exist at the base of the resort, it was beautifully sunny right to the higher peaks. The downside being that you can now expect a lot of slush on the slopes. The best option being to head out early if you can when temperatures are lower and ski traffic less. It is March after all though, so you have to expect such conditions. Just remember to adjust your skiing technique as it can be in these type of conditions that you get twinges and twists with ski’s not moving quite as they would on smooth pistes!

Overall it’s looking like a great ski week with sun every day just the sign of snowflakes at the weekend. With just over a month left of the season it’s time to get in as much skiing as possible before winter is all done and dusted for another year!
