Happy Easter in Val Thorens

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Andy Wilson, Updated

With only a few weeks left of the season, there are parties left right and centre in Val Thorens and we’re having a ball. The town’s various haunts have been populated largely with a mix of seasonnaires and students, all eager to take a piece of the famed Val Thorens nightlife for themselves. Celebrating their birthday this week was The Frog and Roastbeef and it was an apt occasion for a boozy shebang. Whilst they didn’t have the luscious weather that we thought would continue ad nauseum (a planned foam machine and hot-tub had to be cancelled) the day-long party got everyone in fantastic season-high spirits. With the option to go all in for €35 everybody was distinctly merry by mid-afternoon and eager to demonstrate their skills on the snowy bucking bronco outside. There was live music throughout the day as two bands duelled on either side of the room, occasionally making room for a karaoke song and music from DJ Laserman. Acting as the seasonnaire post office and general meeting place, there is always an extremely welcoming atmosphere up at The Frog and it was a pleasure to join them in celebrating their birthday.

It’s the Easter holidays and, as such, there is a mixture of nationalities and ages in resort and everybody is in a festive mood. Whilst their numbers have decreased since last week and the week before, there are still plenty of students on University trips (largely British and Scandinavian) to keep the boozers in business. This is however, a more family centric time of year and there are a great deal of children in resort this week. As usual, the town is doing its upmost to keep everybody entertained, and there is lots of activities and events to keep everybody busy, young and old.

The tourist office and the ESF have done a superb job in providing activities to keep the youngsters entertained (and give their parents some much deserved peace). After a day in ski school there’s nothing like changing it up with that other great snow based activity; human foosball! With free registration at Place Caron on 5pm Tuesday, this is an excellent example of the effort that these guys put into keeping the resort busy. Whilst the concept may sound like some kind of reality TV show from a dystopian sci-fi movie, the kids absolutely love it. With the kids tethered to squishy bars that horizontally cross an inflatable stadium, it works exactly the same as regular table football, only much bigger and with livelier players.

Whilst there is no human foosball on the calendar for next week, there is a wealth of other activities to choose from. Beginning the week with a special Easter torchlight decent and firework display, the tourist office has plenty of festive family orientated activities to offer next week. Most anticipated is the giant egg chase taking place on Wednesday morning. An excellent event for adults as well as children, you can register for free at the tourist office before hand. Beginning at 10:30am, your team is given the task of solving the puzzles to find the eggs that have been hidden around the blue slopes of Val Thorens with prizes for the winning team. For those of you with children eager to indulge their sweet-tooth you can finish up the week with a giant chocolate fondue at Place Caron which is also free. Happy Easter everybody.
