Val Thorens Apres Ski Report: 23rd February 2012

Half term festivities & more reasons to head to Val Thorens

UK half term may have ended but the French holidays are far from over in Val Thorens. The resort has been in mid-carnival madness this week. You couldn't miss the festivities; kids at the creche donned fancy dress and paraded through the streets and there have been jazz concerts, music and parties galore.

The Savoie Snowboard Tour was in resort at the beginning of the week with over 100 participants for an exciting boardercross competition and the Mini Mountain Tour is stationed in the centre of Val Thorens until 2 March for anyone who may be interested in test driving the all new 4x4 Mini Countryman.

As always, Val Thorens has plenty of events coming up for mid-season including the Julbo White Ski Session (spend the week with pro-riders…) and the well known Festi Val Tho for it’s 5th year running - three music filled days with free DJs and concerts on the pistes, aswell as Big Air demonstrations and a Big Air Bag open to all.

Aside from the exciting entertainment, this season is a very special one for Val Thorens as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. With a brand new Funitel lift (the fourth one in resort) in operation since December, there are two new pistes open to the public taking passengers up to the Col du Bouchet at an altitude of 3,003 metres.

“Les Asters” (red) and “Le Chocard” (blue) are not the only new runs for this winter…a new red run called the “Triton” has been created at the top of the Bouquetin Funitel lift so that skiers can make the most the sunny Plein Sud sector of the pistes. The “2 Combes” blue run at the top of the Cascades lift has also now been extended to create a green run to allow beginners to experience real height…it is safe to say that even after 40 years, Val Thorens is still investing massively into the upkeep of its slopes and now includes over 150km of Alpine ski runs open for all until May.

And as if that was not enough to tempt everyone into booking…Val Thorens has had over 5 metres of snow since December (more than double the snowfall over the entire season last year) and the conditions really are exceptional. Temperatures remain low at the moment which means that the snow is conserving well and blue sky days could not be more perfect. Look no further for your winter getaway – VAL THORENS IS THE PLACE TO BE!
