Via Ferrata in the Belleville Valley

Climbing the via ferrata in St Martin de Belleville

A great summer activity in the Three Valleys is via ferrata however it is not something that I had ever come across before in the UK until I came to France.

Basically it is a mix between rock climbing and ‘Go Ape’ style climbing. You have a harness and are attached at all times to a wire leading through the climbing course. It uses a mixture of natural rock footholds and metal footholds along the trail.

A great route in the Belleville valley is “Le Cochet” which is the main peak that can be seen from St Martin de Belleville with a large white cross on the top. You can access the start point by driving through the small village of Chatelard and from there follow the track up where you will find the parking area.

It takes around 30 minutes to walk to the start point of the climb and is steep at points so will get your heart rate up ready for the scramble. The climb itself is relatively straightforward and not too challenging - it is certainly fine for beginners and families. I would say it takes around 40 minutes to complete and you get some stunning views on the way up looking up towards Val Thorens or right down the Belleville valley on the other side.

Once at the top there are 360 degree views of the valley, it's really stunning and makes it worth the climb up. To get back to the parking spot there is around a 40 minute walk back down the other side which is a good thigh burner!

There are additional via ferrata areas in Les Menuires and I understand some great routes over in Courchevel too. The via ferrata locations are free to access but you must have the suitable equipment otherwise you will need to rent a helmet and harness. You can also opt to take a guide along with you if you feel you want the reassurement. Just check at the local tourist office for suitable instructors and routes. A definite recommend if you want to try something different in the mountains.

If you don't have your own equipment, you can hire it from Ski Top in Les Menuires, or The Bureau de Guides provide kit and guiding from 34 euros for an introduction course.
