Best beginner ski areas in Val Thorens
Nursery ski areas
Val Thorens offers several designated beginner zones with nursery slopes and free lifts, making it an excellent place to learn.
- Val Thorens: The main beginner area is located between the Roc, Cascades, and 2 Lacs lifts, where four magic carpet lifts are free to use.
- Les Menuires: The nursery slopes here are found below and to the sides of the Doron lift. There is also a small free lift and piste near the Preyerand gondola, as well as a beginner-friendly section along the Bettex blue piste.
- Saint-Martin-de-Belleville: This area has two small beginner zones and a free drag lift, offering a quieter setting for first-time skiers.
Progressing to pistes
One of the great advantages of Val Thorens is its network of gentle pistes connecting different parts of the valley. Unlike many other resorts, beginners here can explore a wider area without having to tackle steep or challenging runs. This means that learners can enjoy more variety and avoid repeating the same short slopes.
Suggested beginner runs in Val Thorens
If you feel ready to venture beyond the nursery slopes after ski lessons, there are some fantastic blue runs to try:
- Cairn: A wide and gentle piste leading down towards Les Menuires, ideal for those looking to gain confidence.
- Boulevard Cumin: This narrow but flat run follows on from Cairn and provides a relaxed descent.
- Masse 1 area: A great spot for morning skiing, offering calm and winding blue pistes with plenty of sunshine.
- Returning to Val Thorens: Take the Reberty piste followed by the two Bruyères lifts, where you can choose from three scenic blue runs—Mont de la Chambre, Pluviomètre, and Plein Sud—all leading back into the resort centre.
These routes allow beginners to gradually build confidence while enjoying varied terrain across the valley.

Beginner ski hire
Even if there are several equipment options to choose from, we recommend you go for the most basic.
Beginner skis are short, flexible skis that are easy to turn or, if you're snowboarding, you'll have a shorter stiffer snowboard that's easier to control and generally cheaper too.
You won't need to know about the technical aspects of any of the equipment as ski hire shops will advise you to get the best model for your ability and size once you've booked.

Three nursery slopes are available using the easy rider beginner pass:
- Plein Sud (Cairn gondola)

If you wish to explore further afield, the Three Valleys Pass is worth getting - more than 50% of the ski runs are classed green or blue, and you can follow beginner itineraries to discover the whole area.

What should I wear when skiing or snowboarding?
Buying all the gear before you go can be daunting if you’ve never set foot in a ski resort before. The key items to bring with you, along with the obvious ski jacket, ski trousers and sunglasses, are as follows:
- Layers - thermal tops and leggings, fleeces, hoodies, hats and a good pair of ski gloves and a helmet. Weather on the mountain can change pretty quickly, and you are much better off wearing layers of thinner items as opposed to a big, bulky jumper.
- Socks - a variety of socks ranging in thickness, it may sound weird but in our experience hire boots can be quite painful with the wrong socks.
- Sun cream - even when it’s cloudy the sun here can (and will) still get you, and don't forget the underneath of your chin as the sun reflects off the snow too. Don't forget a lip salve with an SPF.
- Piste map - make sure to always have one in your pocket while you're out on the mountain. You can pick up paper copies from the lift pass or tourist office once you've arrived in resort.
