Snow report, 20 March 2025

By Caro Blackwell, Updated

After a cold, cloudy and snowy week, which brought some great fresh snow over the weekend with a good low snowline, looks like we’re in for sunshine and good skiing for a few days.

Current weather in Val Thorens

We have a fabulous sunny bluebird day, today here in Val Thorens and tomorrow looks to be much the same. The temperatures are cold at night but daytime today temperatures will be mild and up to -2°C tomorrow at around 2700m.  It’s still getting cold at night, but the freeze thaw will result in icy conditions early morning, turning soft by the afternoon. However the weather will change again on Friday.

What’s coming up

Friday onwards brings more precipitation and cloudy weather as a depression looks to be pushing its way in from the west. It currently looks like the heaviest rain/snow will be on Sunday and Monday, however only currently forecast to be snow showers.

This latest precipitation is likely to be snow over around 1800m. Temperatures will range from -1°C to -6°C at around 2700m and there will be a moderate to fresh breeze on Friday into Saturday, with winds getting lighter as the weekend progresses.

Avalanche risk

The avalanche risk is currently 2 out of 5 (moderate). Certain slopes have accumulated wind-blown snow, and where the old snowpack is weak, conditions are unstable. The most at-risk areas are shady, less-travelled slopes above 1800m.
If heading off-piste, ensure you have the proper equipment, up-to-date weather information, and seek advice from the resort or a qualified guide.

Not everyone skis

Coming to Val Thorens in winter doesn’t have to be all about the skiing, there are so many activities for non-skiers which means everyone can enjoy a family or group holiday in a ski resort. There are plenty of other exciting activities to enjoy

Why not:

  • buy a pedestrian pass and jump on a lift
  • go to après-ski along with everyone else
  • ride a train, skidoo, horse or husky sled
  • visit a spa for some relaxation and rejuvenation
  • book a restaurant on a sunny terrace for lunch, Tuesday and Wednesday are looking like the favourite days for sunshine
  • learn Nordic skiing or try snowshoeing - you might just like it!
