Val Thorens Snow Report: 7th April 2015

Easter skiing in the Belleville valley

Wow what a day! Booking an Easter ski holiday at this time of year can be a bit of a risk, you know snow conditions might not be all that great, you could be wading through slush and mud. Think again! The risk has paid off for anyone staying this week.

We headed up yesterday just after 9am and conditions were the best they’ve been this season for a long time. The only queue of the day was the first couple of lifts to get up to the top of La Masse and after that it was straight through. There was a slight moment of panic as La Masse 2 stopped dangling us over the fresh pistes - the ultimate torture to sit in the cabin all morning and watch everyone else ski down! Fortunately we were only stopped for a few minutes and then we were on the move again.

The ski group split at the top of La Masse with some people opting for the red run to the right and myself and another opting for the black run to the left. I’m not normally a fan of skiing the same run over and over again, but this was so good we skied down and went back up three times! The piste was in amazing condition with lots of people enjoying the powder sections at the edges. You could feel the secret ‘yee hahs’ in everyone’s mind as we all enjoyed an absolutely awesome day.

From La Masse we headed to Les Menuires and over towards Val Thorens. The runs here were a lot more crowded with people visiting over the Easter weekend and as the day wore on the pistes became more ‘chopped up’.

As I was with some French locals however it was interesting to see the route assessment, always with two lift options to check which had less of a queue and a thorough discussion of runs to head down. On one occasion we took a sharp left off a run and I wondered where on earth we were going. They connected with an absolutely deserted piste that was mostly untouched as we neared lunchtime and was corduroy piste - never mind finding hidden easter eggs, I was more than happy with this hidden piste on Easter Monday!

As one of the ski group only had a mornings ski pass there was no stopping for coffee and we powered on through. Right to the point of racing for La Masse 2 once again to get the last run in before lunch, sneaking through at 12.29pm. We had a good long run down from the top to stop at Chalet de La Masse for lunch. I opted for a bit of an English treat, fish and chips which were absolutely amazing and well needed after a full mornings skiing!

The temperature yesterday was really low as forecast. I had dug out my full down winter jacket again and was very glad I had it to keep me cosy, there was definitely a chill on smiley ski cheeks! The same fresh temperature is forecast today along with blue sky and sunshine. Then it’s a case of ‘repeat’ with sun and blue sky all week with temperatures rising slightly by around 5 degrees which will be noticeable.

All in all it looks like an absolutely beautiful week with amazing snow conditions, who would want to be anywhere else?
