Val Thorens Activity Review: 7th February 2015

Zip through the skies in the Orelle Valley on the highest zip line in the world

By Gemma Hunt, Updated

If you want to add something a little extra to your holiday then why not try the highest zip wire in the world!

Based at the highest point in the Three Valleys at 3230m at the top of the Bouchet chair lift in Orelle you can then fly down to Val Thorens descending 200m in 1minute 45seconds. It’s a 1300m line and you are hanging 250m above the glacier, not something you get to experience every day!

It is only accessible to skiers & snowboarders [not pedestrians] but is available for anyone aged from 8 years to 88 years old. The cost is 50 euros per person and you cannot pre-book you just pay on site or they accept cards if you need to pay that way. Just be aware that due to the height that you take off there can be closure due to high winds.

If you don’t have a helmet already they will provide one for you as you get strapped into your harness. Be prepared for an awkward waddle to the take off point with your skis/board strapped to your back then with a few clicks to attach to the line you are off!

Located in one of the most picturesque areas in the Three Valleys you get to take in the 360 degree views as you fly down the line with your feet dangling over the mountains - a great experience. If you are going quick enough then at the end just put your feet up to meet the landing pad, otherwise you may stop just short and the lift attendant will guide you in. Once again, a few clicks to detach and you are free to ski down to Val Thorens. It's a great attraction for the area and if you get chance then definitely give it a go.

If you don’t know Orelle already, then it’s well worth a visit, also known as the fourth valley on the far right of the piste map. There are two entry routes from Val Thorens, either via the Moutiers and Grand Fond lifts or an alternative route is at the top of Cime Caron and then down the steep black run, Combe Rosael, which is always quiet and gives amazing view points on the ski down. Luckily they have upgraded one of the lifts in Orelle last season so you can get quickly up the first section of the piste, the second lift however is still outdated and so does take some time.

The zip wire is just at the top, you can’t miss it. Be brave and it’s quicker than skiing down!
