Val Thorens Snow Report: 29th November 2011

Waiting for snow and ski for free in Courchevel this weekend

featured in Snow report Author Simon Reeves, Updated

Mild weather recently has given way to much colder temperatures now and the welcome sound of the first operation of the snow cannons can be heard resounding through the valley. The temperature this morning is a chilly -2C and hopefully indicates the onset of a weather change bringing our first snow further down the valley. Higher up though the peaks are already white and for me this always brings on that warm feeling of anticipation for the season to come. Unfortunately, due to the abnormally dry period we have been experiencing, lift opening has today been postponed from December 4th. We will let you know when we have an update.

As winter will soon be upon us it seems workmen all over have a greater spring in their step to complete all the ongoing projects started earlier in the year. All talk is about the new hotel being completed in the centre of town - it looks good and has the added advantage of being somewhere to eat centrally in the square.
Early season workers are beginning to arrive throughout the week giving the place that pre-season buzz. The all important bar talk will no doubt be that snow is just around the corner. We will wait and see.
For those who are really keen to ski, Courchevel has confirmed it will open on Saturday 3rd as planned. Just the Verdons slope will be open during the first weekend. Given the unusual conditions (apparently this lack of early snow has occurred just three times in the last thirty years) the Courchevel tourist office has said ski and pedestrian passes are free.
Caroline is away at the moment, returning in a few weeks. In the meantime thanks to our guest reporter, Simon Reeves.
