Val Thorens Snow Report: 10th April 2015

The season just seems to be getting going now it’s coming to an end!

As the week has progressed, temperatures have risen and I was glad that I had made it out skiing on the chillier days at the beginning of the week when the pistes were in tip top condition.

It has been absolutely glorious all week, a total contrast to the snowy and cloudy conditions last week. It all feels a little too late though with the realisation that normally we have this kind of weather and fantastic snow from March onwards!

People are certainly taking advantage of the warmer temperatures with some pretty suspect outfits on the slopes! I’m not sure if it’s some sort of unspoken retro week as there are some amazing onesies on parade with the essential bumbag and headband accessory. It also extends to the ski kit and I’ve seen people walking around in ski boots that I’m surprised still clip into today’s skis! There’s also been people skiing in shorts and with ski pants and a vest. Hmm. No comment.

With the days staying much lighter longer it really does make for a great ski day as you can push it right to the last lift, stay on the mountain for a well earnt beer at the end of the day and then head down to resort to catch the sun on terraces until after 7pm. Bliss.

As can be expected, the better snow this week is to be found higher up. Lower resorts such as St Martin are seeing a declining snow line as the days go on. I had to avoid a big puddle at the bottom yesterday and was in slow motion trying to snowboard through the slushy home run. With the sun out though and still being able to access great snow for all the rest of the day, there’s no complaints here.

We headed over to Mont Vallon yesterday and whilst it was busy at the top where Les Menuires/St Martin and Meribel all meet, we managed to escape the crowds heading over on the great wide red run heading down to Mont Vallon. We could also take advantage of the deckchair spot at the base and enjoy the sunshine. I did note whilst there that for colder days they have great indoor facilities at Plan de Mains with a cushioned play area for little ones and boot warmers and slippers! That was not however needed yesterday that’s for sure.

There’s no change on the forecast for next week with temperatures in Val Thorens around 10 degrees and a whopping 19 degrees in lower resorts at 1400m. Maybe I’ll see sense in skiing in shorts after all…
