Val Thorens Snow Report: 19th March 2014

Are we still in April or has July suddenly arrived in the Three Valleys? Val Thorens was boasting temperatures of nearly twenty degrees in the sun today but there is still plenty of snow to enjoy.

The French Championships Downhill today had their first run at 7.45! The race was won by the French man Johan Clarey, closely followed by team mates David Poisson and Maxence Muzaton. The best Brit today was Meribel leading local Dougie Crawford who gave a good performance and finished in ninth place just over a second off the leader. The Downhill is over two minutes long which is a very long time to be in a tuck position… Give it a try tomorrow on your skis! Even the best Italian today, Matteo Marsaglia, who finished fourth, complained on Facebook that his legs were burning by the time he reached the finish.

If you fancy feeling the wind on your face upgrade your ticket to a three valley pass and head over to Courchevel to ski the Grand Couloir black run which has been voted one of the top 10 fastest ski runs in Europe! Head up on the first lift to the top of Saulire and spend the whole day getting to know the Courchevel Valley. If you are planning to stay for lunch I would recommend heading to the Bakery in 1850 in the Forum to pick up a not too pricey picnic to enjoy out in the sun.

On the 20th and 21st March La Tania is hosting the Ski 4 Cancer Challenge. This is a great event to help raise funds for Cancer. The aim of the challenge is to ski either the vertical height of Mont Blanc (4807 meters) or Mount Everest (8848 meters) in just one day! This was set up last year by a group of skiers and snowboarders who had lost someone to cancer. To enter the event you can sign up online or just turn up at Hotel Montana on the day. If you want to try something a little different this week, on your own, with your friends or family this is a fantastic experience and all for a great cause.

If you are looking out your window wondering if there will be any snow left by next week don’t worry because snow is on the way! It’s hard to believe but the end of this weekend Val Thorens is due 18cm of snow. The temperature is sitting around -1 degrees so it won’t be chilly and a little cold weather will do the pistes some good!
