Les Menuires Ladies FIS Ski Races

Imprint
By Cara Brown - Ski Racer, Updated

Last weekend Les Menuires hosted two ladies FIS races, one giant slalom and one slalom. The French Europacup team and a few girls from the World Cup team were on the start list, so competition was really tough and I knew I had to give it my all if I wanted to bring in some good results.

First up was the Giant Slalom; the weather was brilliant sunshine and perfect blue skies. The snow was hard and grippy so it was looking like it was going to be a perfect race day.

I was starting bib 16, just missing out on a slot in the top 15 girls. The first run was set just as I like it, not too many turns and super fast. I have only ever had good results in giant slalom races in Les Menuires, so I was expecting good things even though I knew I would have to ski my best to get them.

I had a pretty good first run, moving up a couple of places and putting some pretty fast skiers behind me. I had made a few mistakes and my skiing wasn’t great all the way down the course so I knew I could make up some time in the next run. The next run suited me even better as it was even less turny.

I had a brilliant second run finishing sixth in the run and 10th overall. The only girls ahead of me were on the French team and I had even managed to put a few of them behind me. I was over the moon when I had scored a season best result of 26.71 points in a race where I was the only person in the top 20 to have scored! This takes my points down just under 27 to 26.93.

Coming away from a great first race I was feeling ready for the slalom the following day. I had a pretty good first run and my coaches were impressed with my skiing despite the amount of training I had done. I knew I could do the same in my second run and maybe even a little faster. My second run was around the same as my first but I still managed to move up a few places in the standings. Unfortunately I didn’t score any points but I had a great time and it made me want to get out on my slalom skis a little more often.

My next races are in Bormio, Italy next week and it’s the English National Championships. I’m really looking forward to racing there and hopefully it will be a good week!
